The prize is a prestigious acquisitive award that promotes excellence in painting. It is held every three years at the Maroondah Art Gallery, Melbourne.

The theme for 2009 was I paint because... Celeste Chandler won first prize with her work Untitled 5 (from the series 'naked in the dark'). The judges were: Jane Scott, TarraWarra Museum of Art; Adam Worrall, National Gallery of Australia; and Lewis Miller, artist.
 
The award was managed by Cultural Connotations.

We have completed a significance assessment of this important art collection. This review relates specifically to the 2,000 photographs, drawings, antiquarian publications, watercolours, prints and artists books.
